The Croods 2 was a planned sequel to the 2013 film The Croods, with Chris Sanders and Kirk DeMicco returning as directors and the main voice cast returning for their respective roles. It was originally set to be released in 2017, but was then moved to an unspecified release date in 2018 before being cancelled.
According to DeMicco, the sequel would focus on Ugga and motherhood, making it "the first chapter of society," expanding on the first film, which is about "the last chapter of the caveman."
Why It Was Cancelled Edit
Comcast's purchase of DreamWorks Animation in April 2017 put the hierarchy of Universal Studios in charge of the animation studio. Individuals at both studios stated doubts about proceeding with the project even before Universal was put in charge. Trouble was also evident in August that year when the release date was pushed from November 2017 to 2018. It was announced that DreamWorks made the decision to cancel the project.
There are no plans to bring the Croods back to the big screen, which is unfortunate as the first film proved critically and commercially successful enough to produce a full-time franchise for the company after the financial disappointment of Rise of the Guardians seemed to dash hopes of that.
However, on September 19, 2017, DreamWorks Animation announced the film to be back in production and it is now set to be released on September 18, 2020.
